Yupian: A stallion.
Erya, Shichu: A stallion is called zhi.
Liushutong: To ride a horse up a mountain. Derived from zhi. Zhi means to ascend.
Erya, Shizheng: Zhi means to ascend.
Commentary: The Dialect (Fangyan) says: Between the states of Lu and Wei, it is called zhi.
It also means to settle or establish.
Book of Documents (Shujing), Great Plan (Hongfan): Heaven silently settles the common people.
Commentary: Means to settle.
Shiwen: Zhi is pronounced yi. Ma Rong says it means to ascend. Ascending is like raising, and raising is like giving birth.
Zhengyi: The commentary considers zhi to be the same as zhi. Zhi is interpreted as to complete, and to complete is also to settle; therefore, it means to settle.
Jiyun: Pronounced zhi. The meaning is the same.
Textual Research: Erya, Shizheng: Zhi means to ascend. Commentary: The Dialect says it is called a zhi horse. Cautionary note: The two characters zhi horse are an error in the text. According to the original text, the two characters zhi horse should be corrected to the character zhi.
