Ancient form. Pronounced zhi (falling tone).
Shuowen Jiezi states: A horn-shaped wine cup used during village drinking ceremonies in ancient times. The Book of Rites (Liji) states: One person washes the cup and raises the zhi, which has a capacity of four sheng.
Yupian dictionary: A wine vessel.
Zengyun dictionary: A full cup is called a shang, while an empty cup is called a zhi.
Book of Rites (Liji), section on Ritual Vessels (Liqi): The honored person raises the zhi. Commentary: A vessel with a capacity of three sheng is called a zhi; the term zhi implies suitability, meaning that when drinking, one should do so in moderation.
