According to the Explaining Graphs and Analyzing Characters (Shuowen Jiezi), it refers to the four limbs of the body. According to the Jade Chapters (Yupian), it refers to the four limbs of the body, specifically the hands and feet.
In the Huainan Masters (Huainanzi), Book of Cultivating Tasks (Xiuwuxun), it is stated: Since the time of the Son of Heaven down to the common people, there has never been a case where one could successfully accomplish tasks and satisfy one's needs while keeping the four limbs inactive and the mind unthinking.
It also refers to branches. According to Explaining Names (Shiming), zhi means to branch off, similar to the branches of a tree.
According to the Collected Rhymes (Jiyun), this character is used interchangeably with the character for branch. According to the Correct Rhymes (Zhengyun), it is identical to the character for limb.
