Pronounced zhì.
A black spot on the skin. Also written in a variant form (zhì).
Records of the Grand Historian (Shiji), Annals of Gaozu: Having seventy-two black spots on his left thigh.
Commentary by Shigu: In the Central Plains of China, these are generally called yan (dark spots), while in the regions of Wu and Chu, the local custom is to call them zhi.
Textual verification: The original text stated that the customs of Wu and Chu refer to black spots as zhi, and that they are generally called yan. Based on the original commentary by Shigu, it is corrected to read: In the Central Plains of China, these are generally called yan (dark spots), while in the regions of Wu and Chu, the local custom is to call them zhi.
