Tang Rhymes (Tangyun), Collected Rhymes (Jiyun), Rhyme Compendium (Yunhui), and Correct Rhymes (Zhengyun) state the pronunciation is liu. The Explaining Graphs and Analyzing Characters (Shuowen) states it means to burn a field for planting. The Han Statutes state: "Plow, burn, and weed the fields." The character is formed from the radical for field and a phonetic component indicating a fluttering sound. The Correct Meaning Thoroughfare (Zhengzitong) explains this as burning a field with fire to prepare for planting. It is also a surname. The Correct Meaning Thoroughfare (Zhengzitong) records Liu Zigeng, a man of the Song dynasty, known as the Recluse of Xiaoxian, who authored the Collection of Xiaoxian Lyrics in one volume. According to the Collected Rhymes (Jiyun), it is also pronounced xu, and also pronounced hao. The meaning remains the same.
