Ancient form. Pronounced yun (rising tone).
Shuowen Jiezi (Explanation of Writing and Analysis of Characters) states: to govern. Composed of hand and a stroke, representing one who handles affairs. Guangyun (Expanded Dictionary of Rhymes) states: to advance; also to rectify. Book of Documents (Shujing), Chapter on Lord: Govern this eastern suburb. Also, in the chapter on Many Regions: Bestowed the Mandate of Yin, governing the many regions. Commentary: It means that Heaven bestowed the Mandate of Yin upon King Wen and King Wu to rectify the many regions.
Also a title of office. Book of Documents (Shujing), Chapter on Yi and Ji: The many officials (yin) are in harmony. Commentary: Yin means to rectify. It refers to the chief of the various governing officials. Ying Shao stated: The minister of the Son of Heaven is called Shi Yin. Xue Zan stated: Among the ministers of the feudal lords, only in the state of Chu are they called Ling Yin; in other states, they are called Xiang. Other titles such as the Gate Yin in the Rites of Zhou (Zhouli) who manages gates, the Yan Yin in the Monthly Ordinances (Yueling) who regulates the palace, and the Guan Yin in the Discourses of Zhou (Guoyu) who issues reports, are all of this kind.
Also means sincere or trustworthy. Book of Rites (Liji), Chapter on Meanings of the Formal Visit: Confidence (fu yin) reaches all sides, meaning trust. Commentary: Jade as a substance has inner sincerity (fu yin) that radiates outward, hence it represents trust. Master Ying says: Yin should be written as yun. Yun also means trust.
Also, Book of Rites (Liji), Chapter on Summary of the Rules of Propriety: Dried meat is called yin sacrifice. Commentary: Dried meat must be cut squarely and correctly before it is used for sacrifice.
Also a surname. During the Zhou dynasty, there was Yin Jifu.
Note: According to Li's Detailed Collations of the Sea of Characters (Li Shi Xiangjiao Pianhai), the ancient pronunciation of this character was yun. The current pronunciation as yin is incorrect.
