Chen Collection, Lower Volume Radical: Weapon (shū) 毅 Kangxi strokes: 15 Page 587, Entry 14 Pronounced yi (falling tone). Pronounced yi (falling tone). Pronounced yi (falling tone), reads the same as the character for nose-cutting. Shuowen Jiezi (Explanation of Graphs and Analysis of Characters) defines it as acting with rash anger. Another interpretation is having decisiveness. The character is formed by using the Weapon radical as the semantic element and the character representing a pig's bristles standing up in anger as the phonetic element. Zheng'e (Correction of Errors) argues that the character adopts the hard element indicating strength, and the lower portion uses the pig element to convey the sense of firm determination, thus borrowing it to represent the character for firm resolve (yi). Book of Documents (Shangshu), in the Chapter on the Counsels of Gao Yao, states: Be gentle yet firm and resolute. Zhengyi (Correct Meaning) explains: The Zuo Commentary on the Spring and Autumn Annals (Zuo Zhuan), in the second year of Duke Xuan, records: To kill an enemy is called decisiveness, and to achieve this decisiveness is called firm resolve. This means that having the heart to decisively defeat an enemy is being strong and resolute. The flaw of those who are merely gentle is their inability to be decisive; therefore, to be both gentle and decisive is a virtue. The Analects (Lunyu) states: Firmness, resolution, simplicity, and caution in speech—these four qualities are close to benevolence. The Analects (Lunyu) also states: Master Zeng said: A scholar cannot be without a broad mind and a firm will. Liu Shao's Treatise on Character (Renwu Zhi) states: Being mild, upright, harmonious, and resolute is the virtue of Wood. Being strong, sincere, broad-minded, and firm is the virtue of Metal. It is also the name of a prefecture. The Yudi Guangji (Comprehensive Records of Geography) records: Wu Prefecture was established during the end of the Tang Dynasty, governing one county named Wende. In the first year of the Changxing era of the Later Tang, it was renamed Yi Prefecture. It is also a type of bird. The pheasant is known as the resolute bird because its nature is to fight, as seen in Zhang Hua's Classic of Birds (Qinjing). It is also a term used in the game of Go. Yi refers to capturing pieces. When pieces are surrounded and removed from the board, it is called yi. Placing a piece back after it has been captured is called re-yi, colloquially known as capturing (ti). This is found in Xu Xuan's Principles of Go (Weiqi Yili). The clerical script form is written as a variant.
