According to the Shuo wen Jiezi (Shuōwén Jiězì), it means 'toil'. The Guangyun (Guǎngyùn) defines it as 'suffering'. The Book of Odes (Shijing), in its Lesser Odes section, states: "No one knows my toil." Also, in the Jiyun, Yunhui, and Zhengyun, it is pronounced yì. Also, in the Jiyun, it is pronounced shì. The meaning is the same. The Jiyun notes that it is sometimes written as a variant form pronounced yì.
