Book of Odes (Shijing), Greater Odes (Dà Yǎ): The breast straps were adorned with carved metal plates.
Commentary (Jiān): The decoration on the forehead is called xí; it is an ornament made of carved metal, referred to today as dānglú (forehead plate).
Zuo Tradition (Zuǒzhuǎn), Duke Huan, Year 2: The xí, the luan-bells, and the he-bells serve to manifest their sounds.
Annotation (Zhù): Xí is located on a horse's forehead and is capable of emitting a ringing sound.
