Erya (Approaching Elegance): The Great Yue is called chan, the medium-sized one is called zhong, and the small one is called yue. Commentary: The yue is like a flute; it has three holes and is short.
Guangya (Broad Elegance): The yue has seven holes.
Book of Odes (Shijing), Odes of Wei: Holding the yue in the left hand. Commentary: The yue has six holes.
Rites of Zhou (Zhouli), Spring Officials: The yue master is responsible for teaching the princes to hold feathers and play the yue while dancing. Commentary: In civil dances, there are those who hold feathers and blow the yue; this is what is called the yue dance.
Book of Rites (Liji), Hereditary Prince of King Wen: In the autumn and winter seasons, they study the feather and yue dance. Commentary: The yue is a flute. The sound of the yue is produced during the middle of winter, symbolizing that all things are stored within.
Also, Mingtang Wei: Earth drums, grass mallets, and reed yue are the music of the Yiqi clan.
