According to the Shuo Wen Jie Zi (Explaining Graphs and Analyzing Characters), it is a carriage pole.
According to the Shi Ming (Explanation of Names), yuan means to pull. It is the part of a carriage that pulls it.
According to the Yun Hui (Collection of Rhymes), the Book of Odes (Shijing) glosses state: the curved wood at the front of a carriage that hooks onto the crossbar is called the zhou, also called the yuan. It goes from the rear crossbeam forward, slightly curved and upward to the crossbar, where it rests on top of the crossbar and hooks downward. The crossbar is the horizontal piece at the end of the zhou used for harnessing horses.
