Shuowen Jiezi explains this as the appearance of long clothing. The character structure is formed by clothing, with a shortened form of the component meaning to concentrate (zhuàn) acting as the phonetic indicator.
Also refers to the name of a prefecture. The Collection of Characters (Pianhai) records: Originally the Yichun County of the Han dynasty, Yuan Prefecture was established during the Sui dynasty.
Also a surname. The Comprehensive Record of Clans and Lineages (Tongzhi Shizu Lue) records: The Yuan surname originated from the Gui surname and is a descendant of the legendary Emperor Shun. They belong to the descendants of Duke Hu of Chen. Duke Hu fathered Duke Shen, and Duke Shen fathered Jingbo. The eighteenth-generation descendant Zhuangbo fathered Zhu, whose courtesy name was Boyuan. His grandson Taotu used the courtesy name of his grandfather, Yuan, as a surname, and served as the senior minister of the State of Chen for generations.
Also written as the character meaning carriage shaft (yuán). Also written as the character meaning to pull (yuán). In the Records of the Grand Historian (Shiji), the figure Yuan Ang is written as Yuan Ang in the Book of Han (Hanshu).
The Collection of Rhymes (Yunhui) points out: The character Yuan is formed with the mouth component. Common vulgar variants omit strokes to appear as the variant form, and it is also written as another variant form; both are incorrect.
