According to the Explaining Graphs and Analyzing Characters (Shuowen): The shaft of a carriage.
According to Explanations of Names (Shiming): Yuan means to assist. It is that which assists the carriage.
According to the Rhymes Compilation (Yunhui): The Book of Odes Exegesis (Shigu) states: The curved wood at the front of a carriage that hooks onto the yoke is called the zhou, also known as the yuan. It extends from the rear crossbar, curving slightly upward until it reaches the yoke, where it rests above the yoke and hooks downward. The yoke is the crossbeam at the end of the zhou used for yoking horses.
