According to the Explaining Graphs and Analyzing Characters (Shuowen Jiezi), it is formed by the radical for mountain and the phonetic component yi.
Book of Documents (Shangshu), Tribute of Yu (Yu Gong): The solitary paulownia tree of Mount Yi.
Commentary: To the west of Xiapi County in the East Sea commandery, there is Mount Ge Yi; this is the mountain referred to.
Literary Expositor (Erya), Interpretation of Mountains: That which is continuous is called yi.
Annotation: Refers to mountain ranges that are connected and continuous.
