According to the Explaining Graphs and Analyzing Characters (Shuowen Jiezi), it is composed of the mountain radical with the sound derived from the character representing an exchange or choice (yì).
In the Book of Documents (Shujing), specifically the Tribute of Yu (Yugong) chapter: The isolated paulownia trees of Mount Yi. The commentary notes that west of Xiapi County in the East Sea region lies Mount Ge-Yi; this is that mountain.
Also, according to the Literary Expositor (Erya), in the chapter explaining mountains: That which is continuous is called yi. The commentary notes this refers to being connected in a sequence.
It is also used interchangeably with the character for unraveling (yì). In the Book of Odes (Shijing), within the Odes of Lu (Lu Song): Keeping and possessing the hills of Fu and Yi. The commentary notes that Fu and Yi are the names of two mountains. It is used interchangeably with yi.
It is also the name of a city. In the Zuo Tradition (Zuo Zhuan), under the thirteenth year of Duke Wen: Duke Wen of Zhu divined about moving to Yi. The commentary notes that Yi is the name of a city in the state of Zhu, originally located in Zou County.
