Pronounced xi (flat tone). Explanation from Shuowen: It is qi (spirit/breath). It is composed of the semantic component xi and the phonetic component yi. Also, Fu Xi (伏羲), Da Hao (大皡), the first of the Three Sovereigns. According to the Book of Changes (Yijing), it is written as Bao Xi (包犧). Shiben states that Bao is also written as Pao (庖), and Mengjing writes it as Fu (伏). The character Xi (犧) is also written as Xi (羲), and Mengjing writes it as Xi (戲).
