According to the Book of Broad Rhymes (Guangyun) and the Collected Rhymes (Jiyun), this character is identical to the character meaning light or brightness (xi).
In the treatise on extravagance in the Book of Master Guan (Guanzi), it states: In ancient times, sacrifices were performed at specific times when the stars were bright (xi). The commentary notes: Xi refers to the brightness of stars. There were also those who sacrificed to the morning star.
It is also used as a variant of the character meaning to blaze or to cook (chi). In the Monthly Ordinances (Yueling) chapter of the Book of Rites (Liji), it says: The boiling and heating (chi) must be pure. In the Training in Seasonal Rules (Shize Xun) chapter of the Book of Huainan (Huainanzi), it is written as: The preparation of boiling and heating (xi) must be pure.
