According to the Explaining Graphs and Analyzing Characters (Shuowen Jiezi), it is a type of grass.
Classic of Mountains and Seas (Shanhaijing): On Qingyao Mountain, there is a grass with yellow flowers and red fruit, known as xuncǎo.
Guo Pu’s Illustrated Eulogies (Tuyong): The xuncǎo has red fruit, and its appearance is like the jian grass.
