Chou Collection, Upper Volume Radical: Mouth (kǒu) Character: Xiao Kangxi stroke count: 21 Page 214, Entry 16 In Compendium of Characters (Zihui), it is the same as the character for clamor (xiao). In Approaching Elegance (Erya), in the section Explaining Words, it says: Xiao means leisurely. The commentary states: It describes the appearance of being leisurely and at ease. Also, in the Preface to the Book of Documents (Shangshu), it mentions: Zhong Ding moved to Xiao. The commentary states: It is the name of a place. Also, in the History of the Former Han (Qianhan shu), Treatise on the Five Elements, it says: Those who are clamorous (xiao) will surely be defeated. The commentary by Yan Shigu states: It is the name of an official title in the state of Chu. In the Zuo Tradition (Zuo zhuan), in the sixteenth year of Duke Huan, it is written as Ao. Note: Xiao is a variant form of the character for clamor (xiao). While the Broad Rhymes (Guangyun) uses the character Xiao, all other character dictionaries use the character for clamor. Here, occurrences of Xiao found in the Classics and their commentaries are listed; the remainder are detailed in the entry for the character for clamor.
