You Collection, Lower Volume Radical: City (yì) 鄎 (Xi) Kangxi strokes: 17 Page: 1275, entry 14 According to the Tang Rhyme (Tangyun) and Jiyun dictionaries, it is pronounced xī. A place name. According to the Annals of Spring and Autumn (Chunqiu), Duke Ai of Lu met with the state of Wu to attack the southern border of Qi, and their army was stationed in Xi. Note: Xi was a place in the state of Qi. According to the Explanations of Characters (Shuowen Jiezi), Xi was a feudal state of the Ji surname, located north of the Huai River. Currently, it is Xīn Xī County in Rǔnán Commandery. According to the Rectified Characters (Zhengzitong), the Book of Han (Hanshu), Geographical Treatise (Dili Zhi) writes it as '息' (xī). Meng Kang commented: Originally it was the state of Xi, but later it migrated east, so the character '新' (xīn, new) was added. Today, Xī County in Rǔnán Prefecture is the location of the ancient state of Xi. According to the Zuo Commentary (Zuozhuan), Duke Yin, Year 11, the state of Zheng and the state of Xi had a dispute, and the Marquis of Xi attacked Zheng. Commentary: Some versions write it as '鄎' (Xi). Rǔnán Commandery has Xīn Xī County, and the state of Xi was in Rǔnán, not on the southern border of Qi. Therefore, the character '息' (xī) could have the '邑' (yì) radical added to become '鄎' (Xi), and the '鄎' of Qi and the '新息' (Xīn Xī) of the state of Xi are naturally not to be confused.
