You Collection, Middle Volume Radical: Valley (gǔ) Entry: xi Kangxi stroke count: 17 Page 1190, Entry 22 Compendium of Phonetics (Jiyun), Collection of Rhymes (Yunhui), and Orthodox Rhymes (Zhengyun) state it is pronounced xi. Classified Anthology (Leipian) states it means to act in a contrary manner. Zhuangzi, Outer Things Chapter (Waiwu) states: If a room is not empty, then the daughter-in-law and mother-in-law will quarrel (bo xi). Commentary states: Bo means to quarrel. Xi means empty. Note: Mao says it is composed of the radical valley and the phonetic component xi, pronounced xue, referring to the roof of the mouth, which is different from the character for mountain valley. The Orthodox Rhymes (Zhengyun) inclusion of the radical valley is a common or vulgar way of writing the character for ravine or gorge.
