Pronounced xi (rising tone). The original definition in Explaining Graphs and Analysis of Characters (Shuowen Jiezi) refers to the sound of rapidly flowing water. Another interpretation describes the appearance of flowing water. Sometimes also written in a variant form. As described in Sima Xiangru's Rhapsody on the Upper Forest (Shanglin Fu), it refers to water flowing rapidly and floating. Also found in the Book of Odes (Shijing), Lesser Odes of the Kingdom (Xiaoya): the term xixi zizi. The Erh-ya (Erya), Interpretation of Teachings (Shixun), defines it as a situation where no one performs their duties. Another interpretation suggests it means following others in agreement. The Han Poetry (Han Shi) defines it as a state of being unpleasant.
Also pronounced ya (entering tone), same as a variant character. Refers to a sunken, marshy area of water.
