Pronounced xi.
According to the Explaining Graphs and Analyzing Characters (Shuowen Jiezi), it means dry or dried out.
In the Book of Odes (Shijing), it is written: "The white dew has not yet dried." The commentary explains that this means dry.
In the Book of Rites (Liji), it mentions: "When hair is dry, use an ivory comb." The annotation explains that here it refers to dry hair.
Additionally, the Book of Odes (Shijing) contains the phrase: "The east has not yet dawned." The commentary notes that here it refers to the sun beginning to rise or the sky just beginning to brighten. The sub-commentary further explains that it refers to the time when the day is about to break and the solar light begins to ascend into the sky.
Furthermore, the Dialects (Fangyan) by Yang Xiong records that it also means to sun-dry. In the regions of East Qi and North Yan, this is called xi.
In the Jade Case (Yupian), it is defined as dry. Sometimes it is also written in a variant form (xi).
