Explaining the meaning as cleaning the mouth with water in the Explaining Graphs and Analyzing Characters (Shuowen Jiezi).
The note in the Record of Rites (Liji), Inner Rules chapter, states that cleaning the mouth with water is called shu. It also refers to washing.
The Record of Rites (Liji), Inner Rules chapter, mentions that when caps and sashes are dirty, one should request to wash them using plant ashes and water. The note states that washing with the hands is called shu.
According to the Commentary of Gongyang (Gongyang Zhuan), Duke Zhuang, Year 22, it refers to the place where one washes and cleans while governing the people. The note states that cleaning something that is not dirty is called shu.
It also refers to scouring or eroding. In the Rhapsody on the Long Flute (Changdi Fu) by Ma Rong, it is written that the accumulated water of autumn scours its base.
