Ancient form. According to Tang Rhymes (Tangyun), Collection Rhymes (Jiyun), and Rhyme Meeting (Yunhui), pronounced shu (falling tone). According to Correct Rhymes (Zhengyun), pronounced shu (falling tone), same as the departing tone of the character for book.
Shuowen Jiezi: Benevolence.
Commentary says: The benevolent must act through empathy (shu).
Book of Rites (Liji), Doctrine of the Mean (Zhongyong) commentary: Shu means to measure; it is to measure one's own sense of justice against others.
Analects (Lunyu): Is this not empathy (shu)? Do not impose upon others what you yourself do not desire.
Cheng commentary: Empathy (shu) is the application of benevolence.
Zhu commentary: Empathy (shu) does not mean leniency. It is also said: extending oneself to others is empathy (shu).
Shuowen Jiezi Changjian: Like the heart is empathy (shu), an ideographic compound.
