Explanation of Names (Shiming): When the sun or moon wanes, it is called shi, as it diminishes little by little like an insect eating the leaves of plants and trees.
Book of Han (Hanshu), commentary by Wei Zhao: To wane or decay is called shi.
Book of Jin (Jinshu), Treatise on Astronomy: Among the ten lights, the fifth is called darkness, which refers to a solar or lunar eclipse. It is also called the shedding of light. In the Spring and Autumn Annals (Chunqiu), the original character used is shi.
Rhyme Collection (Yunhui): All things that are eroded or worm-eaten are called shi.
