Name of a grain.
Erya: Explanation of Plants (Erya): Zhong is shu.
Commentary: Zhong is another name for shu, which refers to sticky millet. People in the north use it to brew wine; its stalks resemble grain but are thicker.
Book of Rites (Liji): In the second month of winter, the grand director of wine is commanded to ensure the quality of the glutinous rice and millet.
Rites of Zhou (Zhouli): Use vermillion to soak the red glutinous millet for the feathers.
Annotation: Red glutinous millet is red millet.
Also written in a variant form (shu).
Strategies of the Warring States (Zhanguoce): With catfish-skin caps and millet-stitching.
Annotation: Shu refers to coarse stitching. This is a phonetic loan usage of the character shu.
