According to Correct Rhymes (Zhengyun), pronounced shu (falling tone), same as the departing tone of the character for book. Shuowen Jiezi: Benevolence. Commentary says: The benevolent must act through empathy (shu). Book of Rites (Liji), Doctrine of the Mean (Zhongyong) commentary: Shu means to measure; it is to measure one's own sense of justice against others. Analects (Lunyu): Is this not empathy (shu)? Do not impose upon others what you yourself do not desire. Cheng commentary: Empathy (shu) is the application of benevolence. Zhu commentary: Empathy (shu) does not mean leniency. It is also said: extending oneself to others is empathy (shu). Shuowen Jiezi Changjian: Like the heart is empathy (shu), an ideographic compound.
