Book of Odes (Shijing), Greater Odes, contains the line: May you have long life and happiness.
Xunzi (Master Xun), On Dispelling the Twelve Philosophers, contains the phrase: With a solemn, sturdy, and tranquil appearance.
Notes: Qi describes a peaceful, calm, and fearless demeanor. It also refers to the name of a prefecture, formerly the ancient Ranmang State. During the Song Dynasty, Qi Prefecture was established. According to the Jiyun (Collection of Rhymes), it is also pronounced ji. The seal script (zhuàn) form is written based on the character for base, sharing the same meaning. The character zhi is the seal script variant.
