According to the Tangyun, pronounced as qùyuàn qiē. According to the Jiyun and Yunhui, pronounced as qūyuàn qiē, with the sound of quàn. From the Shuowen Jiezi: To exert oneself. Composed of the Strength (lì) radical, with guàn as the phonetic component. From the Guangyun: To encourage, to help, to teach. In the Book of Documents (Shàngshū) 'Counsels of Yu': He encouraged them with the Nine Songs, so that they would not be corrupted. Also, to be pleased to follow. In the Analects of Confucius (Lúnyǔ): Promote the good and teach them; if they cannot, then encourage them. In the Records of the Warring States (Zhànguocè): The King of Jing was greatly pleased, and promised aid with great earnestness. Note: Quàn here means 'strength' or 'earnestness'. According to the Jiyun, sometimes also written as the variant form juàn.
