Ancient literary records:
According to the Tang Rhymes (Tangyun), pronounced qi. According to the Collected Rhymes (Jiyun), pronounced qiao and yi, with a pronunciation identical to zhi. The Explaining Graphs and Analyzing Characters (Shuowen Jiezi) defines it as also. It is the same as the character for it.
Additionally, the Jade Chapters (Yupian) defines it as a type of earth horsefly.
According to the Collected Rhymes (Jiyun), pronounced chen and ni, with a pronunciation identical to chi. It is interchangeable with the character qi.
Also pronounced zhang and er, with a pronunciation identical to zhi. The meaning is the same. It is sometimes written in a variant form, and was written in an ancient form.
