Shuowen Jiezi (Explanation of Simple and Compound Characters) states that in Hongnong, this refers to a skirt or mantle. Yang Xiong’s Dialects (Fangyan) states that in the regions of Wei, a skirt is called a pei. Guangya (Expanded Dictionary) defines it as a skirt.
Also, Yupian (Jade Chapters) states it is worn on the shoulders and back. Shiming (Explanation of Names) states: A pei is to drape. It is draped over the shoulders and back, but does not reach downward. Zhengzitong (Correction of Characters) states it is a sleeveless jacket. It is abbreviated as bei because it covers the shoulders and back.
