Mao Commentary (Maozhuan) says: Five refers to five bindings. The term refers to the distinct, recurring decorative patterns. One pole has five bindings, and each binding has its distinct pattern.
Commentary (Shu) says: Fearing it would easily break, they bound it with leather, which then served as a decoration.
