A type of fish.
Zhengzitong: The mouth is large and the scales are fine; it resembles the mandarin fish. It is several inches long and has four gills; commonly known as the four-gill fish. It appears during the seventh and eighth lunar months, especially abundant in the Wujiang and Songjiang regions. Bass under heaven generally have two gills, but only those from Songjiang have four.
Biography of Zuo Ci (Hou Hanshu): The only thing lacking is the bass from Songjiang in the Wu region.
Annotation: The Biographies of Immortals (Shenxian Zhuan) states: Songjiang produces superior bass, and its taste is different from that of other places.
Biography of Zhang Han (Jinshu): Upon seeing the autumn wind arise, he recalled the water shield soup and bass sashimi of Songjiang, and thus ordered his carriage to return to his hometown.
