Pronounced lu.
According to the Shuowen Jiezi (Shuowen), it refers to the support block on top of a pillar. Xu states that this term currently refers to the base of a flower bud at the end of a plant branch. The shape of this object resembles such a support, which is what is now known as a bracket set (dougong). In the Huainanzi (Huainanzi), it is mentioned that shorter objects are used as dwarf supports and bracket sets.
Also the name of a fruit. In the Master Lu's Spring and Autumn Annals (Lushi Chunqiu), it is noted that among the finest fruits, those from east of Mount Ji and the Qing islands include the sweet lu fruit. It is sometimes written in a simplified variant form (lu). In the Rhapsody on the Shanglin Park (Shanglin Fu) by Sima Xiangru, it is mentioned that the lu orange ripens in summer.
Also a type of tree. One name for it is yellow lu, and another is poplar lu. In the Supplement to the Materia Medica (Bencao Shiyi), it is stated that yellow lu grows in the valleys of the Shangluo Mountains on the border of Sichuan. In the Tang Materia Medica (Tang Bencao), it is noted that poplar lu, also known as kongshu, is found everywhere. It grows along fences and walls, and its seeds are contained in pods.
