Pronounced ling.
According to the Explaining Graphs and Analyzing Characters (Shuowen Jiezi), it refers to the cross-pieces between the railings. Xu states that this is what people today call the horizontal cross-pieces beneath a balustrade. In the Ode on Jingfu Palace by He Yan, it is noted: The railings and latticework expand outwards. In the Poem Presented to Xu Gan by Cao Zhi, it is noted: A flowing gust of wind buffets the lattice window.
It also refers to the eaves of a house. According to the Guangya, the eave lattice is the same as the roof beam. In the Rhapsody on Mount Tiantai by Sun Chuo, it is noted: Rosy clouds, in elegant patterns, flank the latticework.
It is also written in a variant form (ling). Another variant form exists (ling).
