Pronounced lin.
According to the Analytical Dictionary of Characters (Shuowen), it means to pour water over something. Another explanation suggests that the term refers to the appearance of water flowing beneath a mountain. It also denotes the state of being soaked or dripping wet. Sometimes also written in a variant form (linli).
In the Feather Hunt Rhapsody (Yulie fu) by Yang Xiong, it is described as dripping and extensive.
It is also the name of a pond, specifically the Taiye Pond.
According to the Record of Forgotten Matters (Shiyi ji) by Wang Zinian, in the first year of the Yuanshi era of Emperor Zhao, the Lin Pond was excavated, measuring one thousand paces in width.
It is also used interchangeably with the character for continuous rain (lin).
