According to the Extensive Rhymes (Guangyun), pronounced li. According to the Collected Rhymes (Jiyun) and the Rhyme Collection (Yunhui), pronounced li, with the same sound as the character for parting.
The name of an ancient state of the Rong people. The Li-Rong were located in Xinfeng County of Jingzhao, and their rulers belonged to the Ji clan. Records of the Grand Historian (Shiji), within the Hereditary House of Jin, notes that the daughter of the Li-Rong, captured by Duke Xian of Jin, was known as Lady Li. In the Zuo Tradition (Zuozhuan) and the Discourses of Jin (Jinyu), it is typically written as the character for a black horse (li).
Also used as a surname. In the Han Dynasty, there was a Chancellor of Huainan named Li Zhongren.
