Pronounced li. The golden oriole, or cang-geng (a type of oriole). Also known as the yellow warbler. Guo Pu stated: Its color is a tawny black mixed with yellow, which is how it derived its name. Lu Ji stated: It is called the yellow oriole-stay; in the regions west of the pass, it is referred to as li-huang (yellow oriole). In common parlance, it is called huang-li-liu, or sometimes huang-li-liu. In the region of Qi, people call it bo-shu (grain-catcher), as it often arrives among mulberry trees when the fruit ripens. A folk proverb says: Yellow oriole-stay, watch my wheat ripen, the mulberries are ready. It is also a bird that follows the seasonal energy and keeps track of the timing of the year.
Also pronounced li. The meaning is the same. For further details, one may refer to the annotations for the characters geng and li.
