According to the Explaining and Analyzing Characters (Shuowen Jiezi), it is the same as the cormorant. According to the Strange Objects Record (Yiwu Zhi) by Yang Fu, the cormorant does not lay eggs; it gives birth by regurgitating the fetus. They are born in groups of seven or eight, or five or six, emerging connected to one another. See the entry for the cormorant for further details. Also pronounced lu. According to the Approach to the Odes (Erya), in the section on explaining birds, it states that the cormorant is a type of pheasant. The commentary by Guo Pu states that this is not yet fully understood.
