Pronounced lian. A screen or curtain woven from bamboo used for covering or shielding.
Explaining Names (Shiming): A curtain implies integrity, suggesting that by screening oneself, one maintains a sense of shame and propriety.
Apocrypha of the Book of Rites (Liwei): The Emperor uses outer screens; feudal lords use inner screens; high officials use bamboo curtains; scholars use cloth curtains.
Preface to the Biographies of Wang and Gong in the History of the Former Han (Qian Han Shu): Yan Junping lived in the city of Chengdu, where he divined and told fortunes. Each day he would serve only a few people, and once he had earned one hundred coins—enough to sustain himself—he would close his shop and lower the curtain. He would then spend his time teaching the Old Master (Laozi).
Also, according to the Rhyme Compendium (Yunhui), this is the name of a type of bamboo bark.
