Pronounced lian. Ripples formed by wind blowing across the surface of water are called lian. Book of Odes (Shijing), Odes of Wei: The river water is clear and rippling.
Also used to describe the appearance of flowing tears. Book of Odes (Shijing), Odes of Wei: Tears flowing down incessantly.
Also the name of a river. Commentary on the Classic of Waterways (Shuijing Zhu): The Lian River originates within the borders of Shaoling County. There is also a Lian River in Guiyang. Commentary on the Classic of Waterways (Shuijing Zhu): The source of the Lian River is at Shitang Village, northwest of Guiyang County.
Also, according to the Treatise on Prefectures and Counties (Junxian Zhi), the Shu River is commonly known as the Lian River.
Also pronounced lan. Equivalent to the character meaning large waves.
