According to the Fine Explanations (Boya), it is the same as a shu fish. In the Commentary on the Plants, Trees, Insects, and Fish (Caomu Chongyu Shu) by Lu Ji, it is noted that people in Xuzhou call the shu fish a lian. In the Rhapsody on the River (Jiangfu) by Guo Pu, it is mentioned as the ling, li, yao, and lian fish. Furthermore, according to the Corrected Character Mastery (Zhengzitong), the yong fish is similar to the lian. It is colloquially called the black lian.
