Pronounced qu.
According to the Explaining Graphs and Analyzing Characters (Shuowen Jiezi), it refers to mutual fighting and entanglement without separation. The character is a compound ideograph formed from Pig and Tiger, signifying a wild boar and a tiger refusing to yield to one another. Sima Xiangru stated that the character denotes an animal of the large wild boar variety. Another interpretation describes it as the appearance of a tiger lifting its two front paws.
Also, pronounced qu (rising tone), referring to a large wild boar.
Also, pronounced ju. The name of a beast. According to the Erya (Er ya), the book on beasts, it is an animal whose head moves quickly. The commentary notes that currently in the mountains of Jianping there is a creature like this, about the size of a dog, resembling a macaque, yellow and black in color, with many whiskers. It likes to shake its head violently and can lift stones to throw at people; it belongs to the same category as the ape-like jue.
The Six Writings Explained (Liushu gu) argues that deriving the sound from Tiger is incorrect, and that the combination of Pig and Tiger lacks logic. Sima Xiangru's interpretation is correct.
