In Tang Rhymes (Tangyun), Collected Rhymes (Jiyun), and Rhyme Compendium (Yunhui), it is pronounced jié (with a fanqie spelling of zǐ jié).
According to Explaining Graphs and Analyzing Characters (Shuowen), it is a tally or token of trust. It resembles the shape of something divided in half. In clerical script, it is written as the character jié.
Xu Kai's commentary states that the character jié resembles the shape of something divided in half. For those who guard the country, half of their jié tally is kept within (the court) and half is outside (with the regional official).
