History of the Former Han (Qianhanji): Zhang Liang, Xiao He, and Han Xin were all outstanding individuals among men.
Shuowen Jiezi (Shuowen): Meaning arrogant.
Book of Odes (Shijing): With grain sheaves standing tall. Commentary: Jie refers to the stalks of grain that grow the tallest.
