Pronounced jie (falling tone)
According to the Explanation of Graphs and Analysis of Characters (Shuowen Jiezi), it is defined as a large scepter. It is cited in the Book of Documents (Shangshu), chapter "Guming," which mentions presenting the jie scepter. The Literary Expositor (Erya), section "Explanation of Implements," records that a scepter measuring one foot and two inches in length is called a jie. Furthermore, the Compilation of Rhymes (Jiyun) explains that it is interchangeable with the character jie. The Book of Odes (Shijing), section "Greater Odes," contains the line: "Bestowing upon you a large scepter, to serve as your treasure." The Classified Dictionary (Leipian) records that it is sometimes written in a variant form (jie).
