According to the Dai Records of Ritual (Daidaili), fish swim in the water and birds fly among the clouds, so in winter, swallows and sparrows enter the sea and transform into jie. Also referred to as gejie. According to the Compendium of Materia Medica (Bencao), they have toad-like heads, fine scales, and long tails; they grow in the Lingnan region, dwelling within old walls and banyan trees.
