Pronounced jie.
Shuowen Jiezi (Shuowen) states it means hands and mouth operating together. Book of Odes (Shijing), Odes of Bin (Binfeng) states: My hands are busy with the labor. The commentary states it means to work hard and labor. The sub-commentary states it means using hands to grasp and hold fodder.
Pronounced ji. The meaning is the same.
Pronounced qia. The same as jia. It means to crush or press. Strategies of the Warring States (Zhan Guo Ce) states: Grand Minister Zhong attacked strong Wu for the King of Yue, achieving hegemony, yet Goujian ultimately coerced and killed him. The commentary states this means to coerce and kill.
Pronounced qie. The same as jie. It means to lift or raise.
