According to the Collected Rimes (Jiyun), the pronunciation is derived from the sounds qiu and gong, sounding like xiong. The Refined Definitions (Boya) defines the character as being careful and respectful. The Collected Rimes also notes another pronunciation derived from the sounds qu and gong, sounding like qiong, which carries the same meaning. The Records of the Grand Historian (Shiji), in the chapter on the Hereditary House of Lu, contains the phrase: Appearing cautious and respectful as if in fear. A commentary by Xu Guang states that the term qiong qiong describes an appearance of being careful and respectful, and is pronounced like qiong. The Comprehensive Rimes (Yunhui) notes that the character gong is sometimes written in the variant form qiong. The Collected Rimes also notes that gong is sometimes written in the variant form qiong.
